Capitalizing on Prior Knowledge

Using the Area Model to Teach High-School Topics

Webinar Overview

Students come to us with a working knowledge and procedural skill set rooted in the use of area models. Learn how to tap into that knowledge to teach a range of topics, including multiplication and factoring polynomials, and as an alternative to synthetic division and long division of polynomials.

Through the use of a mathematical model, participants will move from using area models to the tabular method as a means to multiply, factor, and divide whole numbers and polynomials.

AREAS OF FOCUS

During this 30-minute webinar, the following questions will be answered:

  • What is the area model/tabular method?
  • How can I use the area model/tabular method to teach distribution, multiplying and factoring polynomials, and division of polynomials.
  • How is the area model used in earlier grades in Eureka Math/EngageNY Math?
